Olympian athletes, it's time to catch the Olympic spirit. Sharpen your literary skills, ice up your concentration, and sprint through these races. Choose any three assigments from these medal contenders. At least one choice should be in collaboration with a partner.
Ancient Olympic Games: the relay race.
Assignment 1:
Collaborate with a partner and use a Venn diagram to compare/contrast the original games of the ancient Olympics and the games of the modern, present-day Olympics. Use any of the following links for you and your partner to read together and discuss.
Click on this link for your interactive Venn diagram. Below your 2 circles, copy and paste an image from the Internet that shows an example of an ancient Olympic event and a modern Olympic event. Print your completed Venn diagram.
Research the history of one winter Olympic event. Use the following links to gather your research or Google your own search. 1) Identify when the event was first included in the Olympics, 2) whether the event is indoors or outdoors, 3) the name of the last winner, 4) and 1-2 other interesting details that describe the event. Type your report, along with a picture of the event, as described in your Trading Card directions and paste to our Olympic rings.
After you have viewed and researched all the Olympic events, go to this link to vote for your favorite event. Interview another classmate with your flip camera and record his choice and why he chose that event. Present this to the class.
Collaborate with a partner and write 1 acrostic poem using the word "OLYMPICS" for your base. Use the dictionary, thesaurus, and internet resources. Print each word of your poem on a magnetic strip and mount your poem on a metal board. We will take these poems to KidSenses to include with their Olympic display.

Use the internet to research what time zone Vancover, Canada is in. What would you be doing right now if you lived in Vancover, not Rutherfordton? Write a description of what you would be doing. Use your flip camera to make a 1-2 minute documentary describing what you are doing. You may use props from our classroom and around the school or make your own so that your setting will be authentic. Present your video to the class.
